About the New Amsterdam Theatre
The New Amsterdam Theatre is one of the most beautiful and historic theaters on Broadway. Built in 1903 as a showcase for the legendary Ziegfeld Follies, this 42nd Street gem features stunning Art Nouveau architecture with intricate carvings, murals, and ornamental details that make every visit feel special.
After years of neglect, Disney Theatrical Productions led a meticulous $36 million restoration in 1997, reopening the theater as home to The Lion King—which played here for nearly a decade. Today, the New Amsterdam continues as Disney's flagship Broadway venue, hosting their most ambitious productions in a setting that perfectly balances historic grandeur with modern theatrical technology.
With 1,747 seats spread across orchestra, mezzanine, and balcony levels, the New Amsterdam offers excellent sightlines throughout. The theater's central Times Square location makes it easily accessible, and its spectacular lobby and interior are worth arriving early to explore. A visit to the New Amsterdam Theatre isn't just a Broadway show—it's a journey back to theater's golden age.
